What do Ukraine, Austria, Wichita and angry women have in common?

It turns out the answer to that difficult question is our guest today......our good friend Nick!

We explore a ton of subjects today and have a good chuckle in the process.

It's Memorial day 2010, so we first give thanks to all the troops out there before getting down to the fun.

Simon recounts his being taken shopping by wifey and why on earth there was a Mariachi band playing in a place where the demographics are definitely not Hispanic.

Math is hard.

We curse in a few different languages, just for the fun of it.

We then have fun discussing our old banding experiences and some of our favorite bands. Nick says he likes his music like he likes his women.....and we wait until he survives this after his wife hears the podcast.

Nick thinks that Led Zeppelin's tour de force "Achilles Last Stand" was stolen as the basis for Heart's Barracuda. You decide.

Nick wants to discuss Debbie does Dallas again and we explore some alternatives to this famous title, by using our own names. Oh that gets so bad. Some might spit their morning coffee out at this one, (or fall off their treadmills!)

 Physics is harder.

And it's "Rincon!" It's not Lincoln, you idiot. It's "Rincon".

We adjourn outside, since it's such a lovely day. Nick gets well and truly sniffed and wishes he had a dollar for every time that has happened to him......

And finally, we discuss gun laws (with Texas being the focus) and how they impact our safety. You might be surprised what we think/conclude.

The closing music was part of the title track from the "Hidden Step" by Ozric Tentacles....which, if you've got this far and listened to the podcast, will realize that they are one of Simon's favorite bands (in the top 3 in fact.) We've used their music as the closing track for every podcast so far. (The opening music is a track called, delightfully, "Papas got a brand new pig bag" by a band called, imaginatively enough, "Pig Bag".

And that was a fun evening.....peace and KMSMA.

Italy, Facebook and I'm an actor darling.

This week we are joined once again by our good buddy Ashok, but this time no outsourcing is involved.

We are exposed to Greg's passionate fascination with 70's porn music, or at least that from "Debbie does Dallas".
It's best not to ask (but there's some Swiss Yodeling music and Classical Italian stuff in this podcast too).

Where/When will you EVER see these three pictures together like this?

Simon quickly runs through the rest of his recent trip to Switzerland and Northern Italy of Lake Como and Milan. Few mountain tops were seen, especially in Switzerland because of the low cloud base. (Some of the remote valley villages aren't quite what you'd expect of Switzerland, but are gorgeous all the same).

It did result in some dramatic views in Italy though, especially when the numerous thunderstorms rolled in.

However, when it was clear, there were some iconic Italian Lakes views to be taken in. It really is a breathtaking area. (There's something about mountains and lakes when they're combined!)

(One place we visited in particular, and probably every geek's first choice, has to be this, the Villa del Balbianello, where the wedding scene from Star Wars Episode 2 was filmed (and where James Bond recovered in Casino Royale.)

After finally reviewing the last bits of the trip it was back to regular stuff.

Meanwhile, Greg and Ashok were sniffed a great deal by Bae Jiao, for reasons best known only to her.

We contemplate the intricacies of Facebook, and how it's changed things, at least socially.

We've had a few WW2 warbirds fly over recently, and they are part of the Collings Foundation who are visiting Moffett airfield this week. This is a great foundation who are doing what they can to keep airworthy some US aircraft from WW2 and make sure we remember these wonderful machines. You can climb on board a B17, a B24 or have a look at a P-51. If you're feeling particularly flush, you can go up for a flight in one too. Amazing. Take a look at their web site and check out their schedule for the summer.

We give a shout out to our friend Wendy's LA based food blog, http://losangelesfoodreview.blogspot.com.

And since we've talk about Hawaii a little, we mention about the upcoming remake of Hawaii Five-O.

We adjourn outside for some stogies and beer, and we find out a little bit about the recent filming Ashok and Greg got to do with our buddy Akbar Kurtha.

Then things get a little strange and we end up on the subject of what is money, the gold standard, the Knights Templars and other weird stuff. Too many beers probably!

All in all, a fun podcast. Normal service will be resumed shortly.

Oh, and isn't Wikipedia wonderful!

Peace.

A jolly good trip

People of earth. We are back with a brand, spankin' new podcast. This week Simon recounts his recent trip to England, which is actually part 1 of a 2 part podcast....next week it's Italy and Switzerland. We promise no yodeling.

Simon flew to the UK right on the heals of the volcano, and his flight was the first out of SFO following the eruption....talk about last minute.

Throughout the podcast, Greg regales us with useful travel tips for those of you who might not have traveled internationally before (from the US.)

Sooo, moving on, Simon went over primarily to see family, before joining his wife in Switzerland, for an actual vacation.

He stayed in York and the surrounding area:

....and saw lots of relatives, friends (Chris, Malcolm, Ashley, Adrian...you know who you are!), played in a jam with old band mates from school. (Nick, Kit and assisted by Declan) at a local pub.....and it was fantastic fun. He's a tincy bit of video from the event. It was fun.

He then trailed up to Ilkley to see yet more relatives....one really old and very spritely 95 year old, who's sharper than many 30 year olds. Believe me, sharp as they come. 'tis good to see, that's for sure.

He visited one of his favorite places, Betty's tea shop in York
York and the surrounding area is stuffed full of history. Just chock full of the stuff. York has it's Minster and Ryedale has loads of stuff, but Castle Howard is the most famous.
Then it was onto Italy, but that's another story. It was all over far too quickly.

Up up and Away

This week, see the WTHJH podcast in a slightly different environment. We're up in the sky. Yup, you got it, we recorded the podcast while flying in a Cessna 172 over Yosemite Valley. This makes the sound a little different this time: voices more tinny and there's a definite engine sound rumbling away in the background. Play it loud in your car and it sounds like you're actually in the plane with us. We know....we tried it.

We fly out, with Simon a little preoccupied as he's keeping the plane in the air. Greg gives a great commentary on the progress of the flight.

We head over the Central Valley of Northern California, the bread basket of the state, and onto the breathtaking views of Yosemite Valley, covered in snow.

After a little sight seeing (ie flying around in circles), we head to Mariposa Airport for a spot of local burger.

We stumble upon, as we so frequently do, a great local bar that serves an amazing burger. The bar is full of some really interesting characters, but we're far too interested in the food as we're starving by this point.

After a pleasant walk back to the airport (and a walk to the bar, lets not forget that too!) we head home and see the wonderful views of the Bay Area welcoming us.

Greg took some video of the flight, seen here.

Catch you all next week when our feet will be firmly back on terra firma.

Lets us know what you think of this experimental podcast too. To record this, we had to stick a small microphone in our headsets ... rather uncomfortable after 2 hours. However,  we've just got hold of some new equipment that means we can record without having microphones stuck in our pilot headsets so hopefully the sound should improve next time, should this podcast go down well. Let us know what you think. Email us at wthjh@yahoo.com or leave a comment on our Facebook fan page.

If you've somehow stumbled across this from somewhere other than our web site, you can check that out here.

Outsourced Again?? Foxtrot Tango Sierra!!

A certain Rama Kumbaramashamsubraminium tries to take over the show. At least till we catch his arse!

 Rama talks about his Tatas.
Oh, COME ON! We're talkin' about his cars!!

* * * BEGIN SPOILER ALERT!! * * *
[It's not really Rama Kumbaramashamsubraminiu, or even Maha Nakhonamonrattanakosinmahintharayuthayama-
hadilokphopnoppharatratchathaniburiromudomratchani-wetmahasathanamonpimanawatansathitsakkathattiyawi-
tsanukamprasit, his Thai pal. It's really our buddy Ashok!]
* * * END SPOILER ALERT!! * * *

Various & sundry bemusements include:
  • Road-trippin' to the Grand Canyon, quick-like!
  • Why we take trips to "find ourselves"
  • The Afghani House in glorious Sunnyvale (BONUS: Why are Greg's directions there completely loco in the cabesa?)
  • A truly tasteless religious joke
  • Rockin' sitar music a-la Arling & Cameron
  • Even more rockin' ... uhhh ... movie music :-)
  • Enjoying the fresh outdoor evening air while scenting it with the delicate aroma of gnarly big fat stogies
And THAT, friends, makes a podcast a podcast!

As always, Peace & Knead Musty Sourdough Most Ardently (KMSMA)!
